Leaving Flowing Time on Record, the Red Light of “REC”
A design where a “round mark” meaning start recording or recording in progress is placed on a “film strip” representing the passage of time. It symbolizes that “red circle (REC lamp)” that lights up on the display of a recorder or the viewfinder of a video camera, visually conveying the active state that “I am saving this very moment as a video.” While a play mark (▶) is a button to “watch,” this record mark (●) is a symbol of the active action of “keeping.”
Specific Usage Scenes and Suggested Applications
This material is active in any scene where you want to clearly indicate “recording,” from the UI of camera apps to the status display of online meetings.
- As a “Start Recording Button” for Video Shooting and Screen Recording Apps: Ideal as the main button to start recording in smartphone camera apps and PC screen capture software. Users intuitively understand that “Pressing this round button starts recording.” Adding the film design strengthens the nuance of “recording as a video work” rather than just a red circle, blending well into the UI of creative tools.
- For “Recording in Progress” Displays in Web Meetings and Webinars: In online meeting tools like Zoom and Teams, as a status icon informing participants that the contents of the meeting are currently being recorded. Displaying this icon in the corner of the screen conveys the implicit message that “You need to be careful about what you say” and “You can review it later,” which has the effect of tightening the participants’ awareness.
- For “In Operation” Stickers for Security Cameras and Surveillance Cameras: As a design for warning signs and stickers saying “Security cameras in operation (Recording in progress)” installed in stores, parking lots, etc. By combining it with an illustration of a dome camera, you can appeal a strong deterrent effect saying, “Not only is there a camera, but we are firmly recording the footage.” It is an important sign conveying a high level of security awareness.
- For Guidance on the “Archive Save” Function of Live Streaming: In live streaming services like YouTube Live and Twitch, as an icon indicating the setting to leave the video as an archive (recording) after the live broadcast ends. It tells the streamer and viewers that “This stream will remain as a recording,” encouraging follow-up for those who missed it in real-time.
- For Introducing “Shooting Scenes” in Making-of Videos and Behind-the-Scenes: On menu screens of bonus footage or blog articles introducing the production sites of movies and MVs, as an eye-catcher indicating “From here on is the making-of (behind the scenes of the shoot).” It functions as an introductory icon to convey the enthusiasm of the creators and the atmosphere of the raw site, which is different from the polished footage of the main feature.
Editing Tips and the Merits of the EPS Format
Completely free for both commercial and personal use. In addition to PNG and SVG that can be used immediately on the web, EPS data that is easy to process according to the design is also available as a set.
By utilizing the EPS format (vector data), you can freely arrange the expression of the circle (REC mark). Using software like Adobe Illustrator, changing the color of the circle to a highly visible “bright red” is the most effective.
Also, when implementing it on a website or app, if you process it so that the red circle slowly “blinks” in combination with CSS animation, you can produce a more realistic sense of presence and tension that recording is in progress in the present progressive tense.
This Recording / REC (Film) icon is free to use. Commercial use allowed; no attribution or registration required. Please be sure to check the Terms of Use before using.
